Gotta get back on track.

Tuesday 1 November 2011

I still can't believe

I'm in medical school, i'm loving it so much :)

Salsa Socials, Blood, Parties, Crappy Internet and Halloween

So guys, it's that time again.
The past week has been pretty hectic so I wasn't able to update , but this week I have a few days off, so I have time to write a nice long catch-up post haha.

I'm happy to see that's i'm getting a few more followers, I really want to share this journey with everyone, especially people who are aspiring to get into medical school. Thanks :)

So, it's been pretty hard in terms of technology this week, my laptop charger broke so i need to get a new one, and the internet in my accommodation was down also. I was at a loss lol. I've survived using the internet on my phone, but it's hard lookign at such a small screen.

Anyhoooo...

This week I'm learning about blood groups and blood coagulation, it's really interesting! I say that about everything don't I lol?.. Yesterday we did stuff on the ABO blood grouping system as well as the Rhesus system. For example how to prevent complications when a mother is pregnant with a baby who is not the same rhesus group as her. (Btw it's genetically the daddy's fault if the baby is a different Rhesus group lol!)

Yesterday was halloween, and the guys and I went out for a night on the town. SO fun! I dressed up as a devil, spider queen thingy, it was hot lol! And I met a lot of people there too. Ugh there was this one creep in the club though...my guy mates had to pull me away, he was so disgustingly grimy! Makes me sick..

We've done more on the different types of Epitehlium in the body also...things like transitional epithelium in the urinary system, keratinised stratified epithelium (known as skin to us mere mortals), simple vascular endothelium which is one layer of epithelial cels. Glands often have a simple cuboidal epithelium, with larger glands having a stratified cuboidal profle. And so much more.

Yesterday had another transtion meeting. I find them very useful because our mentor is in the year above and he can give us those little tips that out lecturers never give us. I still need to learn my amino acids and what groups they are in (e.g. hydrophilic etc) but I think I'm coping well. But I do have a crapload of printing to do fml...

Last week we had this amazng lecture on palliative care. A lot of people didn't like it, and I get them, because it is a pretty depressing topic, but the lecturer was funny in a good way, and i liked his approach towards the subject. I don't think it's a career path that I would consider, I mean during my year working in a hospice i saw a lot of misery. But to be fair I also saw some beams of hope and kindness that make me keep faith in humanity.

I'm still going hard with my salsa lol, I love it! I Went to a social the other week, and we danced the night away. Tonight I have a lesson, but i'm not sure i'm going to the social, I'm really tired, and have a blood practical early tomorrow morning!!! :( But I least i have thursday and friday off after.

I find it hard to juggle all my work and social comittments and also find time for my self sometimes but i'm gradually striking a better balance. I'm definitely getting more sleep than the last time I posted lol, so I feel a bit healthier. But I still need to clean up my diet..need to set an example for my patients...as if I have any yet lol. A girl can imagine though haha!

So for the rest of today until salsa, I shall be working. I must force myself or I'll be a crap doctor. And let's face it, who wants a shite doctor? :P

Side note: I haven't been too distracted by boys yet...i'm happy, because they're destructive to studies loool

I'm still loving the uni experience..but i miss my laptop :(
My friend from sixth form is having her birthday party on friday, can't wait. She does biomedicine, and loads of my other mates are going. good times.

For now, I have to do some work...gonna revise histology and a bit of cell biology, I find that i'm pretty good at embryology lol, so that's OK for now.

I'm basically at the end of the FHMP module (foundations of health and medical practice), and I am about to start infection and defence next week.

Here is where the real work begins, guys.

Peace, friends!

Anatomy, Medical Imaging and Cringe-Worthy Lecturers

Hello again friends, welcome to another installment of the frantic-med-student show :P

Tomorrow, I'm having another introduction to the anatomy lab..although we had one a few weeks ago? What's going on there lol?
Anyway, last time, I saw a real live dead body (well, not so live I guess then) and I touched it. It felt like vulcanised rubber, so surreal...

Well tomorrow I'm back. I have my white lab coat ready (aah i'm so keen lol).

In the morning I had my Vertical Module session. We had a visitor who came in, and we were able to ask him about his take on the NHS, his personal experiences and his background. He was quite elderly, and so interesting! We nearly ran over because we all had so many questions to ask. I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to divulge any details about him on the internet, so I wont, but it was a great experience. I have to say I was a bit nervous at first..but we were definitely put at ease afterwards. I was a bit late to the session because a damn train on the damn Victoria line was not working or something GRRRR.

Anyhoooooo.....
Today, the lectures were mostly about medical imaging:
MRI,US,CAT and plain film X-ray and the like. The lecture was really interesting, but the lecturer was a bit cringeworthy lol :/ Again I won't talk about him on the internet, it would be disrespectful. I WISH though, it was sooo funny!! Lol

But anyhoooo again..went to the library to try and get a start on learning some thoracic anatomy in time for lab tomorrow. I swear nothing entered my head. But then I always think that and somehow i retain the facts..we'll see how it goes.

I have a second year mentor, (cutest thing you ever saw), and he was saying that this module is nothing compared to the next few modules (like circulation&breathing, infection&defence etc etc) What the hell loool? I'm so tired already with this workload...there's gonna be more??? Haha, well it's my fault I applied for med. I genuinely think that people in med school are mad!!..we're quite extreme people! I mean why else would we put ourselves through 6 years of pain? Well I guess that dedication is what will contribute to making us good doctors :) Hardcore :P

Side note: I have to stop going to tiger tiger nightclub where all the creeps are...:/ Why the hell do i always end up there when I go on a night out?

I have to say though..I'm not really feeling my flatmates. I mean they're decent..but i'm just not clicking with them. Oh well doesn't matter, I have other mates outside my flat :) Or is it just me that's the problem..that's a possibility I have to consider lol!!!

Anyways..I'm pretty ill, so I should get some rest..but Eastenders on BBC Iplayer is calling my name...

Bed...Eastenders..Bed...Eastenders..I think Eastenders wins :P

Peace x

Woow

Im right in the swing of my first module of medical school.
The work is hard, but it's so interesting!!
I've done embryology, sociology, psychology, anatomy, histology, statistics, physiology and so much more all in the space of a few weeks!
It's great! I've also joined salsa, hockey, and gospel choir at my uni, so i'm always busy haha!

They say at medical school to pick 2 out of 3 of the options work, play and sleep.
Well I haven't been getting much sleep that's for sure!!
Peace xx

Today is the day that proper lectures commence. Can't wait!!

SO.....

I'm feeling great, and preparing for Uni.
I've got my accomodation, appaz i'm staying in Schafer House, about 5 mins away from the main campus. Nice!
But I hear rumours that it's pretty shit.
Don't matter, i'm doing medicine!!!

All my friends got into their unis as well.
As for me, I start on the 26th of september, but i'm going to move in on the 24th.
I'm excited and nervous at the same time.
While I'm in med school, I'll try to update you on all that happens to me.
Though i'm well aware that I have no followers LOL
Oh well, this blog has always been mostly for me anyway.

I've started talking to people on my course and accomodation on facebook and TSR and what not, they seem nice, but of course it's always like that in the beginning.
I've also checked out some of the fresher's events, looks good! Us medics have a fresher's fortnight, including a beach party and also an actual trip to the beach!!

I know i'm going to feel homesick when I get to uni, at least for a while. But at least I'm in London, so i'll never be far away from home :) I can get some nice homemade food often :)

I'll update closer to when I move in, but for now, I can actually relax, start reading up, and enjoy the rest of my summer holiday :)

Thursday 20 January 2011

Cambridge

So I got pooled by cambridge, haven't heard anything from King's or Queen Mary's yet after interview, and haven't even got an interview from UCL.

Hmmm.... I've kinda taken the pool as a rejection, to be perfectly honest.
I should find out on the 31st of january if i've been offered a place or not.
Well, we'll see.

On another note, my Statistics 2 exam went well, and I have to revise hard for my chemistry and core maths 3 exam, i've barely started and they're at the start of next week.
Plus I have a russian mock oral next thursday.
Ah well, I just have to get on with it.

Also I passed my open university course!! woohoo :)
